4-1-4.

I wish every week could be like this one. I was supposed to work all weekend, but when I went in on Friday it turned out that we had been left nothing to do; the planning department had their holiday on Friday and had not given us work for the weekend on Thursday. So my boss suggested I stay home on Saturday. (Twist my arm!) I had Sunday as a holiday, and Monday and Tuesday were my scheduled days off. I have to work Wednesday, but ThurFinished scarf!sday I have a vacation day scheduled since we are going away for the weekend. Four days off, one day on, four more days off. I could get used to this.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to take the car in for service, and the garage can't get me in until Thursday morning. I don't know what's wrong; the Check Engine light popped on the other day. This also happened a few weeks ago, and they didn't find anything wrong, so they reset the error code and told me to keep an eye on it; now it's back on. I really hope that this is 1) not too horribly expensive and 2) something that can be repaired in a day - did I mention we are going away for the weekend?
Braided cable.
I finally finished the microfiber scarf, hooray! I didn't want to do fringe, since the Microspun frays so badly and I was afraid it would look like crap; instead I decided to go with an edging. I ended up using the braided cable from the Coronet pattern. I wish I could have blocked it in order to make the seams and edges a little straighter, but it's not a natural fiber. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with it. I hope M.'s mom likes it.

Portrait.

Who Should Paint You: M.C. Escher

Open and raw, you would let your true self show for your portrait.
And even if your painting turned out a bit dark, it would be honest.

O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!

I woke this afternoon to the sound of hip-hop. I knew it was most likely coming from next door; although our neighbors on that side usually don't play loud music in the house, they get a lot of "visitors" who blast their car stereos in the driveway. ("Visitors" is a euphemism for customers. Our neighbors deal drugs.) I went to the kitchen and looked out the window... sure enough, that's where the music is coming from. But then I notice something else - a huge U-Haul truck is parked in the driveway. They're moving out! Our awful neighbors are moving out!

It's a happy day! I just hope whoever moves in next is less scary.

It's still chilly up north.

ScarfThe baby socks have been put aside for a few days, as a friend has asked me to knit a scarf for his mother. He wanted something that would be soft and easy to care for (i.e., machine-washable), and since I don't care for most acrylics, we agreed on microfiber. I'm using Microspun, which is pretty nice stuff for the price, although it's kind of a pain in the ass to work with because it splits so badly. Even though I'm being extra-careful, I still have to drop and pick up stitches whenever I notice a loop hanging out. The first time, I cast on with a size 4 needle, which made a nice-feeling fabric, but the cables looked a little sloppy; so I frogged it and cast on again with a size 3. This is producing a much firmer fabric, but the cables look so much better. It's still pretty stretchy.

Detail of cables and ribs Apparently his mom really loves cabled sweaters, so I chose a simple pattern of cables and ribs. If I had more time, I might have chosen a more elaborate cable, but since my friend is going to visit her in Maine next week, I'm going to have to knit quickly to get it done in time. I took the photos last night; as of now I have knit about 19 inches. I'm thinking about doing an edging instead of fringe; the Microspun tends to look stringy and I don't think it's well-suited to fringes. I may do something from one of Nicky Epstein's books if I have time.
